Paul writing one of his letters to the Corinthians (he does not look happy)

Paul once said “Turn to romans 8” (not): The Bible was not originally divided into chapters and verses, as it is today. These divisions were added starting in the 13th to facilitate referencing and studying the text.

Dividing wisdom into chapters: a handy idea that even Paul missed!

How many languages do you know?: As of September 2023 all of the Bible has been translated into 736 languages, the New Testament has been translated into an additional 1,658 languages, and smaller portions of the Bible have been translated into 1,264 other languages according to Wycliffe Global Alliance.

You could, in theory, share the gospel in 3,658 ways.

I hope you like different types of literature: The Bible contains various genres of literature, including historical narratives, poetry, wisdom literature, prophecy, letters, and apocalyptic texts. Understanding the different genres helps in interpreting the intended meaning and the message! (not to be confused with the translation, which I argue can’t even be considered a translation)

The Bible is a genre mosaic!

The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

John 10:10

In a world that bombards us with competing priorities, it's natural to wonder what the point of following Christ truly is.

In our pursuit of worldly success, material possessions, and instant gratification, we may question the worth of aligning our lives with the teachings of Jesus.

John 10:10 reminds us of the two contrasting paths: the thief who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, and Jesus who offers abundant life.

The thief can represent everything that pulls us away from God's best for our lives – sin, selfishness, and the pursuit of worldly desires. On the other hand, Jesus invites us into a life that is rich in purpose, joy, and fulfillment.

To understand the significance of following Christ, think of of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42.

Martha is caught up in the busyness of hosting Jesus, while her sister Mary sits at the Lord's feet, eagerly listening to his teachings.

When Martha complains to Jesus about Mary's lack of help, Jesus gently redirects her focus. He says, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one" (Luke 10:41-42).

So what does this tell us?

It reminds us that amidst the busyness of life, our primary need is to sit at the feet of Jesus, to prioritize our relationship with Him above all else.

While worldly pursuits may bring temporary satisfaction, they can never replace the abundant life that is found in cultivating an intimate connection with our Savior.

As followers of Christ, the point is to know Him deeply, to align our hearts with His, and to live in obedience to His teachings.

It is through this relationship that we experience true fulfillment and discover our purpose. In our pursuit of Christ, we find peace, hope, and a love that transforms us and spills over into the lives of those around us.

Let us prioritize our relationship with Christ above all else. Let us resist the distractions of the world and seek His presence daily through prayer, Scripture, and fellowship with other believers.

As we do so, we will experience the abundant life that Jesus promised – a life of purpose, love, and eternal significance.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for offering us abundant life through your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to prioritize our relationship with Him above all else and to find our ultimate fulfillment in knowing and following Him. Grant us the wisdom and strength to resist the temptations of the world and to live lives that bring glory to your name. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
